Understanding Biosafety
This online training presents the basic concepts of biosafety, focusing primarily on planning safe experiments. Topics include: risk assessment, containment, biosafety levels, waste disposal, and emergency preparedness.
Who should take it: Required training for University personnel who work at Biosafety Level 2, but applicable to all personnel working with biohazards or recombinant DNA.
Prerequisites: "General Laboratory Safety" and a basic understanding of biology
Estimated time: 20 - 40 minutes
Frequency: Online training is REQUIRED prior to initiating work at Biosafety Level 2.

Safe Handling of Human Cell Lines/Materials in a Research Laboratory
This training provides information about regulations, an explanation of bloodborne diseases and how they are transmitted, procedures and equipment that prevent exposure, hazards and precautions for human cell culture work, Biosafety Level 2 requirements, and medical follow-up if exposure occurs.
Who should take it: All University researchers and laboratory staff who work with human cell lines and other human-origin materials. Employees must take the live version for their initial training. An online refresher version is available to meet the annual training requirement for employees who have already taken the initial live training course.
Prerequisites: "General Laboratory Safety" and "Understanding Biosafety"
Estimated time: 45-60 minutes
Frequency: Annual training is REQUIRED

Transportation of Infectious Substances, Category B
This online training provides information on how to properly ship infectious substances that qualify as Category B material. Topics include: classifying biological materials, selecting proper shipping names, selecting approved packaging materials, marking and labeling packages, and completing all required documentation.
Who should take it: All University personnel who ship Category B infectious materials (including regulated medical waste).
Prerequisites: "Awareness Training for the Transport of Hazardous Materials"
Estimated time: 45-65 minutes
Frequency: Online training is REQUIRED every 2 years
NOTE: To become certified to ship Category B infectious materials, you must notify BSS via e-mail that you have completed this training (and the prerequisite training) and provide the following information: name of the principal investigator, title and approval date of Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) registration, list of Category B materials expected to be shipped within the next 2 years, and list of anticipated shipping destinations.

Occupational Exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens (for non-laboratory personnel only)
This training provides information about regulations, an explanation of bloodborne diseases and how that are transmitted, procedures and equipment that prevent exposure, and medical follow-up if exposure occurs.
Who should take it: All non-laboratory/non-research University personnel with reasonably anticipated occupational exposure to human blood or other potentially infectious materials. Employees must take the live version for their initial training. Units with occupationally-exposed personnel provide live training by individuals who have been trained by DRS. An online refresher version is available to meet the annual training requirement for employees who have already taken an initial live training course.
