The Chemical Safety Section (CSS) is responsible for the development and oversight of programs to ensure the safe handling, transport, use, collection, storage, and disposal of chemicals generated by teaching, research or administrative support activities.
Chemical safety activities include:
- Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs)
- University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Chemical Hygiene Plan
- Employee right-to-know program
- Oversight of special programs relating to formaldehyde and pesticides
- Training and technical assistance are provided to ensure compliance with regulations concerning the transportation of hazardous materials
Chemical waste minimization activities include:
- Redistribution
- Reclamation
- Working with investigators to modify operating procedures.
CSS provides technical assistance for the handling of chemical wastes and emergency response oversight for the cleanup of chemical spills, and exposure to toxic materials.
