The procedures for requesting chemical waste disposal have been developed to comply with US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) regulations. EPA regulations require that the person generating the waste provide the Division of Research Safety (DRS) with a complete and accurate inventory of the chemical wastes for recycling or disposal before they are collected. This allows DRS to evaluate potential hazards and incompatibilities and to assign the appropriate EPA codes to each waste. If DRS does not receive complete and accurate information, the safety of the personnel picking up the waste as well as that of the people who manage the waste before final disposal is endangered. The U of I may also be at risk of a lawsuit if an accident should occur during the transportation of chemical waste off-campus or at the final disposal facility.
The EPA also requires DRS to track each waste container from the location where it is produced until it leaves campus for recycling or disposal.
Campus personnel who generate waste must use the chemical waste pickup request web site described below to send an inventory of waste to be collected. When the pickup is scheduled, DRS will send the requester instructions for printing labels for each waste container of waste. These labels must be affixed to each waste container. DRS will not collect containers that do not have the proper label.
DRS does not hold a DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency) registration and cannot pick up any DEA controlled substance. Refer to the DEA Controlled Substances Guidance for information on the disposal of DEA controlled substances.
Once you have identified the materials for disposal, submit a pickup request on the DRS web site using the Waste Management tab. Select Request a Pickup > Chemical Waste. This leads to a commercial waste management module. You will sign on to the app with your Illinois credentials, then you can search the master chemical list or submit a pickup request. DRS staff will schedule the pickup and send the requester instructions for printing labels for each waste container. The generator will attach each labels to the appropriate container. (The labels will be in the same order as they were entered in the web request, so keeping the containers in the order listed until the labels arrive will make applying them easier.) When applying the DRS waste label, do not obscure the original container label. If the container is small, place the container inside a small clear plastic bag and then apply the waste container label to the outside of the bag. Labels should be applied with the text reading horizontally and the barcode oriented vertically. Containers without a unique ChemTrak waste label will not be collected.
Waste collection will usually be within a week from the date the request is approved by DRS. You will receive an email with the exact date the waste will be collected.
If possible, wastes will be collected in the morning (9 a.m.-12 p.m.) of the designated pickup day. However, DRS staff may continue pickups in the afternoon if there are too many to complete in the morning. Make the area where waste is stored accessible during those times, and have a responsible person available during pickup. DRS personnel do not have access to locked labs.
Two DRS staff members will pick up the prepared waste for disposal. They will confirm that all the containers are labeled properly and check off the items on a preprinted laboratory waste manifest. DRS uses secondary containment for the containers, so there is no need to box them prior to pickup. Storing chemical waste in boxes will only prolong the inspection process.
Containers that have not been properly prepared for pickup will not be taken. Containers that do not meet the chemical waste container guidelines of section Chemical Waste Collection and Storage will also not be accepted.

Multi-hazard wastes are wastes that are radioactive and/or infectious as well as chemically hazardous. Try to avoid mixing chemical waste with infectious or radioactive wastes, as they are difficult and often expensive to dispose of. Please consult with DRS before generating this kind of waste.
